Encoders
Encoders are used to read a rotational speed and direction of movement. They are available in two different types.
1 - The incremental encoder: This type of encoder provides a pulsed output depending on the rotation of the spindle. They are available with a single phase output, which is used to determine the speed or with 2-phase output, which also helps determine the direction of rotation.
2 - The absolute encoder: This encoder output provides a code for each different positions of the axis. It is therefore possible to determine the position of the shaft at any time. The outputed codes are in binary or in gray code.
The encoders are available with different precisiosns, which are expressed as the number of pulses per revolution.

Programmable encoders
Programmable encoders have substantially the same functionality as conventional encoders, but they provide the ability to configure their resolution (number of pulse per revolution).
